Feldkapelle für den Heiligen Bruder Klaus

photos by PIETRO SAVORELLI
Swiss Architect Peter Zumthor was awarded this year's Pritzker Prize. I am amazed by his Brother Klaus Field Chapel. The chapel was commissioned by a German farmer who helped construct the project with his neighbors. The process of construction involved placing spruce trunks in a tent-formation, coating these with layers of concrete over the course of several weeks. A fire was lit in the center of the structure to burn out the spruce tent. Finally, a floor of lead was poured. The top of the structure is left open, allowing sunlight and rainwater to enter from above.
